Poço Iniciático, Quinta da Regaleira
This spiral underground tower, descending nine levels into the earth, is one of the most mysterious and photogenic spots in all of Portugal. The Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra was used in Masonic initiation rites, and looking up or down the spiral staircase creates a mesmerising, almost surreal image. The surrounding gardens are equally stunning, with hidden tunnels, grottos, and fountains.
Tram 28, Lisbon
The iconic yellow tram winding through Lisbon's narrow, hilly streets is perhaps the most photographed scene in the city. The best spots to capture it are along the Alfama neighbourhood, where the tram squeezes through impossibly tight streets lined with colourful tiles and hanging laundry. For the best shot, position yourself on a steep street and wait for the tram to climb towards you.

Estação de São Bento, Porto
This railway station in the heart of Porto is covered floor-to-ceiling with around 20,000 hand-painted azulejo tiles depicting scenes from Portuguese history. The blue and white tiles create a stunning visual impact that photographs beautifully. It's free to enter, and the morning light streaming through the windows creates a magical atmosphere.

Benagil Cave, Algarve
This sea cave with a natural skylight in its ceiling is one of the most iconic images of Portugal. The circular opening lets sunlight pour onto the small beach below, creating an almost cathedral-like effect. You can reach it by boat, kayak, or paddleboard from the nearby Benagil beach. The light is best around midday when the sun shines directly through the opening.

Ponta da Piedade, Lagos
These dramatic golden limestone cliffs, sea stacks, and grottos near Lagos are arguably the most spectacular coastal scenery in Europe. Livraria Lello, Porto
Often cited as one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, Livraria Lello features a stunning neo-Gothic interior with a famous crimson staircase that spirals upward like something from a fantasy novel. It's said to have inspired J.K. Rowling, who lived in Porto while writing the early Harry Potter books. The ornate wooden ceilings, stained glass, and carved bookshelves make every photo look like it belongs in a magazine.
Ribeira do Porto
The colourful houses stacked along the Douro riverfront in Porto, with the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge in the background, create one of Portugal's most recognisable scenes. The best time to photograph it is during golden hour, when the warm light makes the buildings glow. Cross to the Vila Nova de Gaia side for the classic panoramic view, or photograph from one of the many viewpoints along the river.
Azenhas do Mar, Sintra
This tiny whitewashed village perched on a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean is one of the most photographed spots along the Sintra coast. The natural sea pool at the base of the cliffs, with waves crashing against the rocks, creates dramatic images that are hard to believe are real. It's particularly stunning at sunset.
