The Best Beaches in Portugal

With nearly 1,800 kilometres of coastline, Portugal is blessed with some of the most beautiful and diverse beaches in Europe. From the sheltered golden coves of the Algarve to the wild, windswept surf beaches of the Atlantic coast, there's a beach for every mood and every type of traveller. Here are the ones you absolutely cannot miss.

Praia da Marinha, Algarve

Consistently ranked among the top beaches in Europe and the world, Praia da Marinha is the postcard image of the Algarve. Dramatic golden limestone cliffs frame a stretch of pristine sand, with crystal-clear turquoise water that's perfect for snorkelling. The natural rock arches, sea stacks, and hidden caves along the cliff base make it feel like a natural amphitheatre. Access is via a staircase carved into the cliff, and the view from the top before you descend is one of those moments that takes your breath away.

Praia do Camilo, Lagos

Reached by a long wooden staircase that winds down through golden rock formations, Praia do Camilo is a small, intimate beach near Lagos that feels like a secret paradise. The beach is flanked by towering cliffs and connected to neighbouring coves through natural rock tunnels you can wade or swim through at low tide. It's small, so it fills up quickly in summer — arrive early for the best experience.

Praia de Benagil, Algarve

This small beach is famous for being the gateway to the spectacular Benagil Cave — a massive sea cave with a natural skylight in its ceiling that lets sunlight stream onto the sand below. While the beach itself is charming, the real draw is paddling or taking a boat ride into the cave. The moment you enter and look up at that circular opening in the roof, with light pouring in like a natural cathedral, is unforgettable.

Praia do Guincho, Cascais

Just a short drive from Cascais, Guincho is a wild, windswept beach that's beloved by surfers and windsurfers for its powerful Atlantic swells. Even if you don't surf, it's a spectacular place to visit — the wide expanse of sand backed by the Sintra hills, the crashing waves, and the salty wind create a raw, invigorating atmosphere. The beach restaurants here are famous for their fresh seafood, especially grilled fish and percebes (goose barnacles).

Praia da Nazaré

Nazaré holds the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed — a staggering 26.21 metres (86 feet) ridden by Sebastian Steudtner. Between November and February, the Praia do Norte (North Beach) attracts big wave surfers from around the world, and watching from the Farol da Nazaré lighthouse is one of the most thrilling spectator experiences in sports. Outside of big wave season, the main town beach is a lovely stretch of sand with traditional fishing boats and a charming, authentic Portuguese atmosphere.

Visit Nazaré and witness the dramatic coastline on our Fátima, Batalha, Nazaré & Óbidos Tour or our Porto Transfer with 3 Stops.

Praia da Adraga, Sintra

Hidden at the base of the Sintra cliffs, Praia da Adraga is a rugged, dramatic beach that feels worlds away from the tourist trail despite being less than 40 minutes from Lisbon. The dark, craggy rock formations, the powerful waves, and the sense of wild isolation make it one of the most atmospheric beaches near the capital. The seafood restaurant perched above the beach serves some of the freshest fish you'll ever taste.

Praia da Comporta, Alentejo

If you're looking for the antidote to the Algarve's tourist crowds, Comporta is it. This long, flat stretch of white sand backed by rice paddies and pine forests has become quietly fashionable with those in the know — including several European celebrities who own homes here. The vibe is barefoot luxury: simple beach restaurants serving fresh fish and cold white wine, minimal development, and a sense of endless space. The water is colder than the Algarve, but the beach is arguably more beautiful.

Praia dos Galapinhos, Arrábida

Voted the best beach in Europe by European Best Destinations, Praia dos Galapinhos is a hidden gem in the Arrábida Natural Park, south of Lisbon. Nestled at the base of the lush, green Serra da Arrábida hills, the beach has fine white sand and impossibly clear, calm, turquoise water that looks more like the Caribbean than the Atlantic. Access is limited (especially in summer when the road closes and you need to take a shuttle), which keeps it wonderfully uncrowded.

Praia da Ursa, Sintra

This is arguably the most spectacular beach near Lisbon — and one of the hardest to reach, which is part of its charm. A steep, 20-minute hike down a clifftop path brings you to a wild, untouched beach dominated by enormous rock formations, including the "bear" (ursa) shaped rock that gives the beach its name. There are no facilities, no lifeguards, and often very few people. It's raw nature at its most powerful and beautiful.

Praia de São Rafael, Algarve

One of the Algarve's most picturesque beaches, São Rafael combines golden sand with dramatic rock formations and clear, calm water that's ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The sculpted sandstone rocks create natural pools and sheltered areas, making it particularly good for families. It's well-serviced with a beach restaurant and sunbed rental, but still manages to feel less crowded than some of the more famous Algarve beaches.

When to Visit

The best time for beach holidays in Portugal is from June to September, when temperatures are warm and rainfall is rare. The Algarve has the warmest water and most sunshine. The Atlantic beaches around Sintra and Cascais are stunning year-round but the water is colder — perfect for surfing and dramatic walks even in winter.
